Genesee & Wyoming

During the founding of Genesee & Wyoming more than a hundred years ago, it was nothing more than a business investment with a single, 14.5-mile railroad transporting salt from a mine located in New York. Later in 1899 the track was bought by Edward Laton Fuller. The track transported salt from Greigsville all through out Retsof and Caledonia. Eventually, the Genesee & Wyoming track was connected to the Valley Railroad, Western Railroad, Pittsburgh Railroad, Lehigh Valley Railroad, Erie Railroad, New York Central Railroad and Delaware, Lackawanna.

And almost a decade after Fuller purchased Genesee & Wyoming, the formerly single, rail-road track included a small passenger division. Annually, some 10,000 tons or products were brought yearly. These products include applies, hay, beans, lumber, grain, apples, and even cabbages together with almost two hundred thousand tons of salt. While in 1910, the railroad carried almost 1,500 tons of mining tools and equipment as well as an estimated 6,000 tons of coal and 1,300 tons of manufactured products such as clothing, food, furniture, musical instruments all to be delivered to the Retsof Mining Company Store.

During the 1970’s Genesee & Wyoming had contributed for the business growth of International Salt Co. into a big corporation, with the Retsof Mine fast turning into one of the largest salt mine across the globe. But the railroad has remained dependent on just one product and one shipper.
Aside from this, the Northeast rail system has affected Genesee & Wyoming by becoming bankrupt. Many has started thinking if there’s any future at all with a rail system.
